Ohhhh Noooo! Not Again!

Dozer Dog here. Mum says to tell you that Cooper has blown his right rear knee like I did last year and the year before. They almost had to pick Mum up from the floor at the vet's office. She was incredulous (which is a big word which I do not understand). "How could this happen?" she squealed. The vet thinks either our family is cursed or it was just "one of those things". (Mum says that I can't say that because the vet never said we were cursed.)

That's the bad news. The good news is that Cooper is pretty much pain-free. He is probably too old for surgery but Mum says they'll keep that up their sleeve in case things go from bad to worse (like if he blows out his left knee). Coop is going to have shots twice a week of some drug into his knee (yeeech!) and Mum said the vet will be doing that because she draws the line at shootin' shots into knees. He'll do that for eight weeks and if it shows it is helping him, then he'll go to one to two shots every month.

Dad threw a fit and started doing research on ACL's in dogs. He thinks we're not eating right or something because Tinker, his Cocker Spaniel when the old geezer was a boy, ate table scraps and ran by Dad's bike just fine and never broke his knees. I'll go with the table scraps theory any day - bring'em on!

This is me being a pirate because this blog is supposed to be all about me and we have spent much too much time on Cooper. Focus on my picture, I am in need of comforting too.

Thank you all for your kind words, prayers and crossed paws on Cooper. This was, of course, not the news we wanted but at age 12 Cooper has many good years ahead. While we joke around on our blog, our dogs are an important part of our lives and I am truly touched by the many nice notes from people I have never met and yet feel are dear friends in my life. Thank you all! Love, Nancy

Oh Cooper!
This really isn't the news we wanted, is it? I am going to keep ya in my prayers, buddy. I hope these shots help and that we can avoid surgery.
For now, you need to stay off that leggie. Make Dozer wait on you hand and paw, okay??
Tell your momma we are sending her BIG hugs. This stuff is hard.

Love,
Pearl

Oh no! Didn't he see on my blog that the DWBK (dogs w/ busted knees) club is not accepting new members! I know our little club might look fun from the outside so maybe that is why he did it? Poor Coop! It does seem odd statistically speaking that 3 out of the 6 knees in your house would go... I read that a grain-free diet can benefit doggie joints (tendons included) so we switched to grain-free but I am not sure what that is based on and we switched for lots of reasons not just that. I personally could see it being just one of those things. I sure hope the shots work because although he has lots of years left I know that surgery is difficult for the more 'distinguished' pups! Take care!

Gosh, Dozer, I didn't even know you had knees.

Sorry to hear about Coop. Listen to Moose Mom. I think that your dad needs to take a lesson in statistics. Just sayin.

I am glad that Coop will not have the surgery because that is kind of dangerous for a more senior dog such as himself. If he can stay pain free without it, then go for it.

Mango

Coop, you haven't been ski racing when your parents weren't looking have you?!? I only ask because between the two of them, Mom and Dad have blown out 3 knees in doing so. That said, Mom survived for 10 years without a new ACL, and skied and played tennis (sort of a human version of fetch) and all sorts of stuff before she had surgery. So hopefully you can stay pain-free. Although maybe you might want to give up the ski racing; at some point it's best to know when to call it quits! ;-)

And Dozer, we'll give you all the kisses you want - especially since I think you need a bigger pirate hat and more accessories, like a parrot or something!

You are both deserving of attention, and we hope you will get your share of it during the recovery period for Coop!

Oh no Cooper. Sooo sorry about your knee, dear pup. I'm somewhat mollified that it doesn't hurt much, but how do hoomans know that, other than to maybe observe no limping? I'll be thinking of you lots and keeping paws crossed. And thanks for telling us the story, Dozer. You will be thought of lots too!!!
